St. Angela Merici Bruins Showcase Grit in Postseason Tripleheader

In an electrifying postseason tripleheader weekend, the St. Angela Merici Bruins' girls basketball team displayed exceptional teamwork and resilience across three intense games. Held on March 1 & 2, 2025, the Bruins faced a series of tough opponents, with games taking place at St. Rose for the first two and Notre Dame Academy for the third.
The series kicked off against St. John of Glandorf, where St. Angela clinched a narrow victory, 30-26. The top point scorers, Grace Fitzpatrick with 8 points and Lucy Hanna with 7 points, led the charge. The second game posed a challenge against St. Michael of Ft. Loramie, where despite fierce competition, the Bruins were outscored 27-19. The team rebounded spectacularly in the final game against Sts. Peter & Paul of Ottawa, securing a dominant 46-32 win, highlighted by an impressive 13 points from Reese Meredith, one being a 25 foot 3-pointer! Sofia Kappler, Lizzy Papesch, Hanna an Hannah Schoaff also got into the long-distance parade, hitting key 3's in the last game.
Throughout the series, the team demonstrated notable performances in all areas. Sofia Kappler, Lizzy Papesch, and Rose McGreal consistently provided key assists and great team play, while Maeve Kelley and Hannah Shoaff dominated rebounds and steals. Papesch and McGreal got into the scoring parade in game #3, showing off some of their shooting skills. The defensive prowess of Shoaff and Kappler was particularly noteworthy as they always shut down the opposing team's best offensive players. Also, Kelley, Hanna, and Fitzpatrick were playing fast and confusing the other team, and each had multiple steals and assists in each game. Maeve seemed to grab every loose ball over the course of three games! Grace Bocan added a much needed spark every time she stepped onto the court and gave the team a much needed lift. The team missed Lilly Incze, who was unable to join due to travel.
The weekend had its ups and downs, with several players facing injuries. Nevertheless, the team's spirit remained undeterred, culminating in a notable third-place finish for the season and a commendable 14-3 record. Player Lucy Hanna remarked on the experience, stating,
"The Redemption Tour was awesome. This group of seniors is very special."
Echoing her sentiment, coaches Tom Kelley and Peter Fitzpatrick praised the team's determination and skill, believing fully in their capability as one of Ohio's top teams. Coach Kelley
"We fought really hard this weekend and had some tough injuries with Grace Fitzpatrick, Grace Bocan and Reese. Despite that, the girls came out and played amazing basketball. We never backed down from anyone. This team is one that nobody wanted to play in the state tournament!"
Coach Fitzpatrick,
"What a great few years with the girls and coach Kelley. I will always remember the great times and having lots of fun with this team. It's a very special group and I look forward to seeing them all move forward into college and great future successes!"
As the season concludes for the Bruins, the achievements and memories forged by this talented group are sure to resonate well beyond the high school courts. With strong comradery and a passionate team, the St. Angela Merici Bruins have left an indelible mark on Ohio's basketball scene. The last event on the schedule is a post-season banquet, stay tuned for one last get together for the 'Redemption Tour'!
