Niagara University Purple Eagles Advance in UNYCRC Playoffs With Victory Over Clarkson Golden Knights
In the first home playoff match in recent memory, Niagara University Purple Eagles emerged victorious against the Clarkson University Golden Knights on October 27, 2024, with a final score of 25-15. The win on a cold, sunny, and windy day propels the Purple Eagles further into the Conference Championship game.
The Purple Eagles' started the scoring in the 6th minute of the match with Faith Burtnick '28 making one of her long runs on the day. Clarkson would answer with another score shortly after keeping the game level at 5-5. Burtnick would make another break crossing over the white wash for a second try of the game to give the Lady Purple Eagles the lead to end the first 10-5. The second half was a back and forth affair with Clarkson starting the scoring off. However, Nina Kurzdorfer '27 and Grace Bernhard '28 would score their first career tries with Burtnick rounding off her hat trick to pull away from Clarkson for the 25-15 win.
With the victory, the Purple Eagles are onto the UNYCR Conference Championship AND have clinched a spot in the National Collegiate Rugby DIII 15s Championships. Our conference championship match is scheduled for Sunday, November 3rd, at 12pm on our new NU Rugby field against SUNY Geneseo. This will be a rematch of the Senior Night match where SUNY Geneseo showed just how formidable opponent they really are. The UNYCR Conference Championship match will no doubt be a highly contested match.
