NU Women's Rugby Claim 2nd Annual Fox 7s Tournament Championship!
The Niagara University Rugby women's team showcased their dominance in a recent tournament on March 30, 2025, claiming the championship with a series of commanding performances. Under the guidance of our coaching staff, the women outscored their opponents 181-15 across five matches, displaying their prowess in both offensive and defensive play.
The tournament kicked off with a resounding 53-0 victory over Nazareth University, setting a high standard for the matches to follow. Key players like Faith Burtnick '28, who contributed successful conversions and tries, alongside Emma McNab '27, Tateum Hillman '25, and Mya Teijiera '26, Jessica Yu '26, and Isabella Kelley '26 played pivotal roles in the opening round win.
Continuing their strong performances, the Purple Eagles then faced SUNY Brockport, securing a 40-0 win. Faith's accuracy in conversions and multiple tries were significant in maintaining the team's unbeaten streak. Sophia Lima '25 and McNab's contributions were also crucial in ensuring another flawless victory.
In their third game, the team faced a slight challenge from Ithaca College but managed to conquer it with a 31-5 win. Faith and Makenzie Addley '25 stood out by controlling the pace and delivering crucial tries, helping the team maintain momentum with a last-play try before halftime and sealing the victory with a final strike in the second half.
The fourth game was the start of the knock-out round with the Purple Eagles taking the #1 seed of the tournament. We would take on Siena College, who earned the #4 seed. With the Fox 7s Tournament Championship in the grasp, the Purple Eagles earned a 31-5 victory. Faith and McNab were once again influential in this victory, with the team's defense holding strong against any challenges. This victory put the Purple Eagles in the Championship!
The championship match was no different as Niagara University Rugby clinched Fox 7s Championship with a 28-5 victory over Clarkson. McNab and Emma Cook '25 opened the scoring, while Faith's kicking accuracy proved pivotal in scoring vital points. Along with this victory, NU Women's Rugby claimed their 2nd consecutive bid to the Collegiate Rugby Championships in Boyd, MD at the end of April.
With a National's bid locked up, the women's team will have a weekend off during Alumni Weekend '25, but will be back in action at the North Atlantic Rugby Conference 7s tournament on April 12th at Springfield College.
