Niagara University Rugby Faces Tough Loss Against Roger Williams University
With high hopes, our NU Purple Eagles went about business as usual with an eye on continuing their postseason run. With Roger Williams University Hawks coming to campus on Sunday, November 17, the men prepared for a show down on the newly minted NU Rugby field.
The game kicked off with Roger Williams being the aggressor early. Putting the Purple Eagles under attack, their pressure would pay off as Roger Williams was able to dot down a try in the 2nd minute (conversion was converted). NU did not take it lightly as they gathered their composure and took control of possession on the ensuing kick-off. After a few phases, Jacob Nagelhout '28 was able to dot down a try in the corner in the 4th minute (John Rovente '27 was unable to convert). After a few minutes of each team trading punches, the Purple Eagles would strike again off a scrum inside the green zone. Johnny Rizdy '28 was able to dot down our next try in the 24th minute (conversion was not converted). The first half would end with Roger Williams capitalizing on several Purple Eagle penalties and dotting down 2 more unconverted tries of their own. First half score was NU 10 Roger Williams 17.
The second half started with our Purple Eagles ready to make corrections to our defensive structures while taking better care of possession. Unfortunately, we were unable to execute in our green zone and as the match wore and on our defensive pressure was made moot with Roger Williams exposing a narrow defense wall. Final score Niagara University 10 Roger Williams 45.
Although the score doesn't reflect our effort, our Purple Eagles played with courage and a unrelenting desire to prove they belong in the post season. It was just not our day. Our hats off to a strong Roger Williams side! With the loss our fall season comes to an end. As we begin our fall season evaluations and exit interviews, this loss does not take away from the incredible strides our program have made over the last 15 months. Each individual has brought pride and accountability to the jersey and we will learn from the lessons we have from the fall and look forward to applying them to a national championship run for the upcoming spring 7s season.
As the our spring season becomes more solidified, we will be sure to share our schedule. We sincerely appreciate all the love and support we have received from our alumni, parents, and university. Although it is not the ending we wanted, we accept this defeat with our heads held high and look forward to continuing the march to becoming a nationally recognized rugby program.
