Niagara University takes on University of Wisconsin-Platteville in NCR Round of 8!
With a hard fought victory 24 hours prior, your Niagara University Purple Eagles looked forward to their NCR National Round of 8 matchup against #2 ranked University of Wisconsin-Platteville at Obetz Stadium on Sunday, November 17th. After a night of recovery, we knew it would be tough match but were excited for the chance to continue our season.
The match kicked off with both teams working phases to feel out each other's defense. It would be Wisconsin-Platteville who would strike first with an unconverted try at the 10th minute which was followed up with the a converted try in the 13th minute. NU would strike back with a well worked try by Emma McNab '27 in the 15th minute (Faith Burtnick '28 converted). Wisconsin-Platteville would answer with a converted try in the 18th minute. Jessica Yu '26 and Burtnick would respond with tries of their own in the 24th and 30th minutes (Burtnick converted Yu's try) tying the score at 19-19. Wisconsin-Platteville would take advantage of a couple miscues defensively and put in a few more tries bringing the first half score to Niagara University 19 University of Wisconsin-Platteville 36.
The women kicked off the second half and continued to the take the fight to Wisconsin-Platteville, but in the 50th minute Wisconsin-Platteville would punch in a converted try. NU would not make it that easy as they continued fighting and in the 63rd minute McNab would score an answering try with the hopes of a comeback on their heels. Unfortunately, NU could not capitalize on possession and Wisonsin-Platteville would score 2 more tries to end the game. Final score Niagara University 24 University of Wisconsin-Platteville 55.
With the loss comes the end of a very successful fall campaign for the Purple Eagles. Not the ending we were anticipating, but the women can look back with pride on the season as they finish as one of the top women's programs in the country! We would like to say thank you to all the alumni, parents, and the university for all the support we have received throughout the season. The players recognize that there are several lessons to learn, but it only vitalizes the team as we look forward to a national championship run in the spring for 7s.
