Saint Ignatius Wildcats Thrash Eagles in Freshman Holy War Showcase
In a breathtaking display of talent and teamwork, the Saint Ignatius Wildcats dominated the football field against the Saint Edward Eagles under a pristine October night sky. For the first time since 2018, the Freshman Wildcats came out victorious. Saint Ignatius outscored their rivals 35-6 in the 2024 chapter of the Freshman Holy War held at Saint Edward High School last night.
From the first whistle, Saint Ignatius was in control, with an electrifying start highlighted by Wide Receiver Jake Lamirand's spectacular 65-yard touchdown catch and run on the first play of the game from a pass thrown by QB Jake Mikin. The Jake to Jake connection is real folks... Lamirand continued to produce early with a jump ball caught in the endzone for touchdown #2, setting the tone for the night. Lamirand on his huge plays to put the Cats up big in the first quarter:
"I saw he was playing man and I got to the inside and just saw green grass ahead. On the second TD, I saw one on one and I knew I could beat him. Credit to Mikin for putting it on the money."
Mikin, didn't skip a beat after those first two touchdowns, connecting flawlessly with receivers Jackson Greiner and Logan Drummond to accumulate four first-half touchdowns. An imposing defensive play by Linebacker Matthias Michalek led to Defensive Lineman Luke Spinos advancing the Wildcats further into scoring position, culminating in another touchdown right before halftime, bringing the score to a staggering 28-0.
Saint Ignatius' defense was relentless, forcing three turnovers and curbing any potential offensive threats from the Eagles. Key defensive plays from Safety Carter Wick with two interceptions, and a critical fumbled punt recovery by Logan Drummond that was jarred loose by Teague Deinhart, magnified the Wildcats' dominance on all three sides of the ball.
Following the game, Head Coach Matt Rechin praised his team's performance, “Super proud of our young men. Much to be excited about in Wildcat nation. Our players rolled right off the bus with a mindset of playing for each other. And they dominated from start to finish in all 3 phases of the game…offense, defense and special teams. It was an amazing experience. Yeah…an amazing experience for sure."
Nick Restifo Hon '19, the Freshman Offensive Coordinator, celebrated the team's robust execution, hinting at even greater potential.
"Great things happen when everyone does their job. We had great execution last night. It was our most prolific output so far, and we can be even better. The boys all played great. So proud of them. Go Cats."
With this victory, the Wildcats improve their season record to 5-1. The Freshman Wildcats can hold their heads high knowing they imposed their will from start to finish, setting the table for much to come with this class of 2028 and the entirety of the Saint Ignatius Football Program. Back to work next week as Wildcats host in-state powerhouse Archbishop Moeller of Cincinnati next Saturday, October 12 at Euclid Stadium.
