Saint Ignatius Freshman Football Wildcats Triumph in Season Opener Against Avon.

The Saint Ignatius Wildcats ushered in their Freshman Football season with a decisive victory over the Avon Eagles on August 23, 2025. The game, held at Brooklyn Memorial Stadium, saw the Wildcats defeat of the Eagles with a final score of 31-12 under a bright and beautiful, partly cloudy afternoon sky.

The game kicked off with Avon scoring a touchdown on the first drive, but the Wildcats quickly responded with a touchdown score of their own on behalf of a strong effort to avoid a couple tackles and get into the endzone by running back Tyler McMillon. The Wildcats kicked a field goal through the uprights to make it a 10-6 halftime lead. In the second half, the Wildcats poured it on the Eagles, getting in the enzone three more times. McMillon was a standout player, scoring twice on the day, while quarterback Anthony Abruzzo and wideout Jack Buckley each added one. Notably, the Wildcats' defense was vigorous, turning the game in their favor with critical plays throughout the afternoon. TJ Salata made a pivotal interception, and both Rylan Janocek and Jimmy Lentz recovered fumbles, contributing to the Wildcats' control over the game.

The Wildcats' offense was significantly bolstered by their offensive line, which created effective openings and drove back the Eagles' defense, especially in the latter half of the game. Quarterback Anthony Abruzzo, alongside running backs McMillon, Max Lashinger, and Zavion Suon, capitalized on these opportunities, each recording significant yardage. Luke Zamecnik's dual role as linebacker and special teams ace was also critical, as he was flawless in executing field goals and PATs.

McMillon, reflecting on the team's performance, attributed their success to the collective effort and praised the offensive line for their exceptional gameplay, indicating a promising start to the season.

Looking ahead, the Wildcats are scheduled to play their next game against Pickerington North High School on August 30, 2025, striving to maintain their winning momentum.
