Girls soccer wins outright SWC title after shutout of Elyria

Senior Night provides an opportunity to celebrate the 12th-graders who have dedicated their high school careers to a particular program. For the Avon girls soccer team, it was also a night to win the outright Southwestern Conference championship.

Six different players scored goals for the Eagles, who romped past visiting Elyria Wednesday, 6-0. Avon is now 10-4-2 and finishes the SWC slate with a 6-0-1 mark, clinching the first SWC title for the program since 2022.

“Every year, that’s something we always put on our list, our to-do list,” said coach Attila Csiszar. “We’ve struggled the past couple of years, but we finally got it done and I’m excited. The girls deserve it. They’ve been working hard.”

Csiszar started 11 seniors against the Pioneers, including forward Lillian Dobrovic, who has missed the entire season with a concussion. The match started with the ball being kicked to Dobrovic, who then booted it out of bounds and was removed from play.

“This is a girl who has been to every practice, everything that we’ve done,” said Csiszar. “She shows up on time and doesn’t complain, even knowing that the whole season she would not play. She came to every training session, every game, and she never played. She’s been so devoted to us, so it was nice to get her in.”

It was also nice to get playing time for the seniors, many of whom don’t see much action because the program is blessed with lots of young talent.

“We’ve got so many kids,” said Csiszar. “I mean, they’ve been so devoted to this organization, to what we’ve done at this school. The crazy thing is, we have 50-some-odd players who play year-around, and it’s tough. We were just talking about how tough it is on a lot of these players to play here at Avon, because they would be starters elsewhere. So, we’ve got 13 seniors, and it was exciting to get all of them in. It was fun as a coach. It’s so nice when everyone gets in.”

Grace Demaline scored the opening goal for the Eagles less than 5 minutes into the match. The senior chased down a long pass from midfield, beating Elyria goalkeeper Jayden Daberkow to the ball. Daberkow, who was peppered with 26 shots on goal, came off her line to get the ball, but when Demaline beat her to it, the forward used a simple move to get around the keeper and put the ball into an empty net. It was the third goal of the season for Demaline.

“This was so much fun,” she said. “My whole four years of high school, I’ve just been waiting for this night to celebrate with my friends and my team. And it’s just amazing that it just happened to be our conference win, too. I think it’s cool that we got to win it on our Senior Night. We’ve been working so hard the whole preseason, the whole season, the whole past three years. And it’s just amazing that we got to do it here.”

Csiszar stayed with his all-senior lineup until the final 16 minutes of the half, and the match changed immediately once the starters got in. First, sophomore Sydney Thomas scored her team-high 18th goal in her usual fashion, simply speeding her way around the Elyria defense and then beating Daberkow from point-blank range. Twenty seconds later, freshman Carmela Cruzado put back her own shot after a save by Daberkow, making it 3-0.

Less than 2 minutes later, senior Lauren Tindera cleaned up a loose ball that came free when Thomas hit the far post, giving Avon a 4-0 lead. In the second half, senior Allie Argabright and junior Ella Graham added goals to reach the final score. Lily Fitch was in goal the entire match for the Eagles, who put together their seventh shutout of the season and third in a row.

“With our schedule the way it is every year, I beat them up during the year,” said Csiszar. “Our games that are a little easier are typically our conference games. We played some heavy hitters like Hudson and Anthony Wayne and Magnificat. We played some tough teams. Today it was just so nice to get everybody out there. Everybody enjoyed the game, and it was a great win for us.

“We’ve got players who don’t get much time. Their role is to be a good teammate and work hard. When your number gets called, you go in there and give 110 percent. And that’s what they do. Every one of these players has done that. That’s why I love coaching these girls. They’re all in it for each other, not for themselves. That’s what makes it special.”

Next up for Avon is a trip to Brunswick Monday to end the regular season. The Eagles then will begin the postseason as the fifth seed in the Division II district. They will host the winner between North Olmsted and Wooster on October 21.
