Thunderbird Wrestlers Shine at Sectionals: Oberg and Owen Set Sights on State Championships
Baraboo High School's wrestling team celebrated significant achievements at the recent WIAA Sectional tournament, where wrestlers Peyton Oberg and Nolan Owen showcased their exceptional skills and secured spots in the 2025 WIAA State Individual Wrestling Championships. Peyton Oberg, competing at 132 lbs, demonstrated sheer dominance throughout the tournament. He began with a swift victory, achieving a technical fall against an opponent from Sun Prairie East in just 1 minute and 46 seconds. His relentless momentum continued in his second bout against a DeForest competitor, securing a fall in 2 minutes and 45 seconds. The highlights of his day came with a hard-earned 12-10 decision over a formidable freshman from Oregon, crowning him sectional champion and marking him as a three-time State Tournament qualifier. Meanwhile, Nolan Owen, at 157 lbs, displayed similar tenacity and prowess. He, too, made quick work of his first opponent from Oregon with a technical fall that took just 1 minute and 10 seconds. Continuing his impressive form, he won his next match with another technical fall in 1 minute and 37 seconds. Despite a tough challenge in the finals against the undefeated Sam Zanton from Middleton, Owen fought valiantly before falling 8-1. His performance earned him a runner-up finish, and a second State Tournament appearance. Coach Alex Knipp spoke highly of his athletes, emphasizing their readiness for the state challenges ahead. 'With Oberg and Owen both qualifying for State, the anticipation is high as they prepare to compete against the best in Wisconsin. Their hard work, dedication, and resilience have led them to this moment, and they will undoubtedly give it their all on the mat this coming weekend,' said Knipp. As Oberg and Owen prepare for the state championships, their achievements reflect not only their personal capabilities but also the strength and spirit of the Baraboo High School wrestling program.
