Baraboo opened its season road match at Sparta with the kind of control coaches want to see early, and the Thunderbirds turned that steady pressure into a 3-1 victory Tuesday in Sparta. Playing on a windy turf field, Baraboo spent most of the night in Sparta’s half and leaned on quick passing, communication and a strong attacking shape to secure the result.
The Thunderbirds set the tone early by pressing the ball and consistently playing to feet, which kept Sparta on the defensive for long stretches. That approach produced a balanced scoring line for Baraboo. Nina Stout scored once, Kylee Hollenbeck-Smith finished with a goal and an assist, and Maya Ferrera-Hunter added a goal. Aubrieanna Gamarra-Cook also contributed an assist as Baraboo created chances throughout the match.
Hollenbeck-Smith’s all-around night helped drive the attack, both as a finisher and setup player, while Ferrera-Hunter and Stout each converted opportunities to give Baraboo the edge. The Thunderbirds’ ability to move the ball cleanly and stay organized in possession was a central part of the match, especially in difficult wind conditions that could have disrupted rhythm.
Baraboo also got an important defensive presence from goalkeeper Rachel Wegner, whose communication stood out across the match. With the Thunderbirds controlling possession and territory, Wegner helped keep the back line organized and ensured the pressure stayed tilted toward Sparta’s end. Even with Sparta finding two goals, Baraboo’s defensive structure and control of play allowed the visitors to protect the lead.
For the Thunderbirds, the performance offered an encouraging early-season template, aggressive pressure, composed passing and contributions from multiple players in the attack. Baraboo will try to carry that momentum into its next match Thursday at Tomah.
