The Lyndhurst Police Department hosted a crucial Driver Safety Assembly at Charles F. Brush High School on April 25, 2025. With prom season in full swing, the event took place in Welser Gym and aimed to educate students about safe driving practices. Jessica Yurko (pictured above) delivered a powerful and eye-opening message as she shared her personal struggles with driving under the influence. Her story—including the consequences of jail and prison time, as well as the joy she’s found in sobriety—resonated deeply with the students. They also engaged enthusiastically in the interactive activities provided by Bella and Jenifer from University Hospital Safe Community Initiative, including navigating a pedal cart course and attempting simple tasks like tossing a basketball while wearing

"drunk goggles."

These exercises gave them firsthand insight into how alcohol impairs coordination, timing, and judgment. To further emphasize the message, a heavily damaged car - involved in a motor vehicle crash - was parked in the upper lot as a visual reminder of the potential consequences of impaired driving.

SRO Dave Lozada led the session, outlining the severe risks and legal consequences of driving under the influence.

"The goal is to make the students drivers aware of the dangers and legality of driving while intoxicated. This is prom season"

said Officer Lozada, emphasizing the timely nature of the event.

The assembly is part of the Daily Community Engagement initiative under the Lyndhurst Police Department. Principal Scully expressed her support, saying,

"I think it's important to speak to the teens about the importance of making smart, safe decisions behind the wheel."

This initiative highlights the department's commitment to fostering safer community environments for young drivers.
