NU Women's Rugby at Frostbite 7s
Niagara University Women's Rugby took to the road February 28th to head down to Landisville, PA to take part in Frostbite 7s. Last year the women had a strong showing going 5-0 in the Open Division. Looking for a stronger challenge and needing experience with a 2 day tournament, we joined the Premier Division to enhance our preparation for our home tournament (Fox 7s on 3/30/25) as well as the CRCs (4/25-4/27).
Day One:
Match 1: Niagara vs Walsh (15-10 W)
Niagara started their Frostbite 7s campaign with a hard-fought 15-10 victory over Walsh University (formerly Notre Dame College). Faith Burtnick '28 led the charge with two tries, while Tateum Hillman '25 added another to secure the win. Though conversions proved difficult, Niagara's defensive efforts were crucial, with Tateum and Mackenzie Addley '26 making key first-half tackles and Emma McNab '27 stepping up in the second half. Strong running performances came from Alencia Daoust '25 in the first half and Mya Teijiera '26 in the second, while McNab was a force in turnovers throughout the match. Niagara edged Walsh in rucks and controlled key line-outs.
Match 2: Penn State vs Niagara (0-32 L)
A tough battle against Penn State saw Niagara struggle to gain possession, leading to a 32-0 loss. Faith and McNab worked tirelessly on defense, while Mya and Mackenzie had strong running efforts. However, Penn State dominated posession, which left Niagara unable to build momentum.
Match 3: Niagara vs AIC (0-33 L)
Niagara faced another setback against AIC, unable to put points on the board in a 33-0 defeat. The team fought hard but struggled against a relentless AIC attack. Despite their efforts, turnovers and set-piece losses cost Niagara dearly.
Day Two:
Match 4: Niagara vs Kutztown (12-0 W)
Bouncing back on Day Two, Niagara secured a well-earned 12-0 victory over Kutztown. McNab and Cindy French '28 each crossed the try line, with Faith adding a conversion. Defensive efforts were led by Sofia Lima '25, while McNab had multiple turnover wins. Strong running from McNab, Faith, and Mya helped drive the team forward. While Niagara won a key scrum, line-outs remained a challenge.
Match 5: Niagara vs Kutztown #2 (29-5 W)
Building on their earlier win, Niagara delivered an emphatic 29-5 victory in their second matchup against Kutztown. McNab starred with a hat-trick of tries, while Faith contributed a try and two conversions. Tateum also added a try, showcasing Niagara's growing offensive strength.
Match 6: Niagara vs Walsh (Forfeit, 31-0 W)
Niagara closed out the tournament with a dominant first-half performance against Walsh, which led to a 31-0 victory. Faith played a pivotal role, scoring two tries and adding three conversions. McNab also crossed the line for a try, capping off a strong finish for Niagara.
The Foxes finished the Frostbite 7s with a strong showing with their only losses to Division I varsity programs. Emma McNab '27and Faith Burtnick '28 were standout performers, leading in both attack and defense. The team showed resilience, improving in key areas such as turnovers and rucks. Despite early difficulties with possession and set-pieces, Niagara's determination and teamwork paid off, closing the tournament on a high note.
