Spartans Fall To Nighthawks In Double Overtime Thriller
PERU — It took double overtime to settle things Wednesday night, but Peru slipped past Saranac, 3–2, in a thriller between two CVAC rivals.
The Nighthawks struck almost immediately, as Jordan Osborne finished off a feed from Seanan Edwards less than two minutes in. The Spartans clawed back before halftime when Nolan Hamel buried the equalizer in the 35th minute.
Saranac carried that momentum into the second half, going ahead 2–1 on a goal by Theran Ducatte off a setup from Henry Napper. But Peru answered to draw level again, with Deacon Whitmarsh scoring off an Osborne assist.
Neither side broke through in the first overtime, but in the second session Edwards found the winner, converting off a pass from Alex Watts in the 98th minute.
Both goalkeepers were outstanding. Saranac’s Damian Lannon turned away 20 shots, while Peru’s Matt Trombley had 17 saves.
“We played a very solid game against the eighth-ranked Class A team in NYS,” said Saranac Head Coach Calvin Hamel, who praised the Spartans’ effort despite the tough loss.
With the result, Saranac moves to 1–2 on the season. The Spartans return home Friday to host Beekmantown.
