BEEKMANTOWN — Experience met youth Thursday night in a Champlain Valley Athletic Conference volleyball match in Beekmantown, and the result was a straight-set victory for the Eagles over Saranac (25–16, 25–15, 25–13).

The win pushed Beekmantown to 5–1 on the season and once again showed why the Eagles are viewed as one of the CVAC's most polished teams. They passed, set, and hit with efficiency, a product of both experience and familiarity.

Senior Julia Conroy was steady throughout, leading the defense with 17 digs while also chipping in a block. She said one of the keys has been the team’s chemistry.

“It’s been super fun this year,” Conroy said. “We all seem to be playing at a next level, and we’re working super hard in practices every day and keeping each other (motivated).”

Senior libero Gabby Vassar, praised by her coaches for her fantastic service receiving and steady leadership, said the team’s habits in practice are what carry over into matches.

“We just focus on the little things,” Vassar said. “Our drills are super simple, but they really help build our basics and that helps us succeed out there on the court.”

On the attacking side, Beekmantown had balance and options. Sophia Kenyon led the way with nine kills, followed by Jade Burdo with eight. Burdo was particularly effective at key moments, finishing off rallies when the Spartans had threatened to build momentum. Setter Sawyer Fleming dished out 16 assists and added nine digs, while sophomore setter Ava Dauphinais contributed 14 assists of her own. Kylie Bishop chipped in for the Eagles with three service aces.

Beekmantown head coach Abby Bone said she was pleased with the consistent approach.

“Super happy with the effort of our team,” Coach Bone said. “They played consistent throughout the match for the most part. We’re continuing to move in the right direction as we get further into the season.”

Bone stressed the importance of doing the small things well.

“Big thing we tell our girls all the time is they just need to do their job and do the little things right,” she said. “Then the harder things are going to come naturally.”

While Beekmantown’s play looked sharp, the story on the other side of the net was about growth. Saranac (3-3) entered the season with just two returning players on a roster comprised of one freshman, seven sophomores, and two juniors.

The young Spartans played with grit and hustled throughout the night. They dug up tough serves, found ways to score with timely kills, and kept each game within reach early before Beekmantown pulled away.

Second-year Saranac head coach Shelby Peck said she has been impressed with her group’s attitude.

“Being a young team, what we want to see is continued improvement, and that’s exactly what we’ve seen this season,” Peck said.

Two of the Spartans leaders agreed that the process is as important as the result.

Sophomore Isabella Curtis said, “With a young team, it’s about getting better every match.”

Junior Rowan Staples echoed the same theme:

“Being a young team means that we can progress together and we can grow and learn together. It’s definitely fun — you’re with friends and we all get along great.”

Bone also noted Saranac’s potential. “They definitely have many talented players with lots of potential,” she said.

Due to their being the lone Class A school in Section VII, Beekmantown will has no sectional tournament to look forward to this season. The Eagles have set their sights on capturing the CVAC title to stay hungry and and prepare for New York State regional play.

Beekmantown will be back in action Monday at Saranac Lake. The Spartans will look to continue building experience and confidence as they host Lake Placid that same evening.
