Saranac, Canton Battle to 2–2 Draw in Non-League Clash
SARANAC — The Saranac Spartans boys varsity soccer team went toe-to-toe with Section X powerhouse Canton on Monday night, and after 80 minutes of momentum swings and clutch saves, the teams walked off even in a 2–2 draw.
For much of the first half, defenses ruled the night. Both Saranac and Canton clogged lanes, denied runs, and leaned on their keepers to keep the game scoreless heading into the break.
The second half, however, had no shortage of fireworks. Saranac struck first when Henry Napper found the net at the 20:37 mark, finishing off a setup from Carson Ryan to ignite the Spartans’ home crowd. But Canton wasted no time in responding. Less than four minutes later, Tomi Husinec leveled the match for the Golden Bears, assisted by Aaron Rosales at 24:07.
With the score knotted, the final 20 minutes became a back-and-forth sprint. The Spartans regained the lead when Theran Ducatte pushed through the defense and buried an unassisted goal at 38:38. But just as quickly, Canton answered again. Husinec notched his second of the night with 39:43 on the clock, this time set up by Will Andes, tying the game at 2–2 and ultimately sealing the result.
Both keepers deserved credit for keeping the match from climbing even higher. Saranac’s Damian Lannon finished with 14 saves, including several sprawling stops in traffic, while Canton’s Zadok Roiger turned aside 18 shots in a busy outing.
Afterward, Saranac head coach Calvin Hamel praised his players’ effort against one of the toughest defensive teams in the North Country. “I thought we matched their energy and created some really good chances,” he said. “That’s a team that makes you earn every touch, and our guys kept fighting.”
The draw moves Saranac into a quick turnaround with a league test at Northeastern Clinton on Tuesday, September 23, in Champlain. “It’s never easy playing back-to-back nights,” Hamel said. “But this was a character game for us, and we’ll look to carry that same fight into tomorrow.”
