Top-seeded Eagles blank Rocky River, look to Elyria next

Over the weekend, Avon’s boys soccer team earned the top seed in the upcoming Division II district tournament. Then, on Monday, the Eagles showed why, blanking host Rocky River, 4-0, in non-conference action. Avon is now 10-2-3 overall with one regular-season match remaining at Elyria.
Four different players found the nets for the Eagles, who scored two goals in each half while constructing their eighth shutout of the season. Cole Veverka opened the scoring off an assist from London Carnie, followed by sophomore Brayden Carlin, who scored the first varsity goal of his career off a pass from Keagan Tarkany. Carnie added a goal off an assist from Connor Britt, who closed out the scoring on a goal from Logan Fitchko’s assist.
Avon plays at Elyria Wednesday and can clinch an outright championship in the Southwestern Conference with a victory.
As for the postseason, the Eagles were awarded the top seed by a vote of the participating coaches, with Avon Lake being seeded No. 2 and Brecksville-Broadview Heights earning the third seed. Avon will play its first postseason match October 22 against the winner of Youngstown Boardman and Parma Normandy, who meet on October 13. The district final will be held October 25 at Parma’s Byers Field.
