Eagles reach season’s midpoint with undefeated record

By Joe Magill
Halfway through the regular season, the Avon volleyball team sports an undefeated record following a thrashing of winless Elyria on Thursday in a Southwestern Conference match. The Eagles are now 11-0 overall and 7-0 in league play and won by the scores of 25-8, 25-11 and 25-6.
Coach Kara Coffman was able to rest some of her starters, as Londyn Stone, Bethany Sherwood, Clare Freaney and Ally Brediger played in only two of the sets. Lily Hamilton led the way for the Eagles with 10 assists, six kills and two aces. Sherwood also had six kills and added a solo block. Emily Styers and Caroline Busold each had three of their team’s 14 aces, while Busold also had 15 digs and Madison Demerle had 12 assists and two aces.
The remaining regular season schedule contains several challenges, starting with the fact that six of the 10 matches are on the road, including at Perrysburg, which is ranked third in the state in Division I in the most recent state coaches poll, and at Magnificat, which is ranked second in Division II, one spot ahead of Avon. The Eagles also must travel to Olmsted Falls on September 18. The Bulldogs, ranked seventh in Division II, are the only SWC team to take a set from Avon thus far.
The next match for Avon is September 16 at home against North Ridgeville.
