Brown Men's Rugby Faces Tough Defeat in Friendly Against Yale Bulldogs
In a friendly rugby match held on September 20, 2025, at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, Brown Men's Rugby B-side experienced a challenging game against their long-time Ivy League competitors, who are currently situated in the D1-AA table of the Liberty Conference, the Yale Bulldogs. Despite the clear and warm weather proving ideal conditions for rugby, the Brown team couldn't capitalize on their early opportunities, ultimately falling with a final score of Brown 7 - 45 Yale.
The first half of the match saw some competitive play from Brown, managing to secure a path to the opponent's end late in the period. It was Ethan Liew who finally broke through the Yale defense to score a try at 38:20, followed by a successful conversion from Bryan Onwuka, marking the halftime score at Brown 7 - 17 Yale. Coach Ryan Grant expressed his thoughts after the match, highlighting the team's effort and room for growth,
"We played hard and were able to keep things close in the first half. We made a lot of mistakes in that half that we felt were within our control to correct and hopefully get some points back as the game went on. Unfortunately, that didn't happen, and despite a tremendous effort from all the players, our execution just wasn't on the same level as our opponent today. We had a number of players playing out of position today, and inexperienced players taking on larger roles for the first time. As a result, we all learned from this experience and we can address these issues on the training field."
The Brown's B's, currently holding a season record of 2-1, will next take the field when the team travels to Hanover, NH, to take on archrival Dartmouth College. The match presents an opportunity for the team to regroup and address the issues faced against Yale. As they continue their season, improvements in execution will be pivotal for overcoming the challenges that lie ahead.
