Brown Men's Rugby Secures Fourth Liberty Conference Title with Dominant Win Over Syracuse
In a decisive final match of the regular season on November 1, 2025, the Brown Men's Rugby Bears faced off against Syracuse University's Hammerhead Rugby at Marvel Field, Brown University, in Providence, Rhode Island. The weather favored the game with sunny and cool conditions, despite the frequent gusts of wind. Dominating from the onset, Brown secured a 47-0 lead by halftime and concluded the match with a final score of 59-12.
Brown opened the scoring early, with Erik Estienne scoring the first and last tries in the first half. The last came in the 35th minute on an eye-popping run off a Syracuse restart kick. Additional tries were scored by Theo Romero, Charm Tuala, and Marco Lapierre, showcasing a well-rounded offensive effort from the team. The team was also awarded a penalty try late in the first half when Syracuse collapsed the Bears' rolling lineout maul just before the forwards could cross the goal line. The scoring for Brown slowed in the second, but Langford restarted the scoring with a try in the 45th minute, and Tripp King got another, finishing from a well-executed set piece, in the 60th. Langford, also handling conversions, successfully added extra points for six of the eight tries.
Head Coach David Laflamme expressed satisfaction with his team's performance,
"We needed to win this one to control our final standing atop the table in the Liberty Conference and set us up with a bye during the first round of the national playoffs. The players knew what was at stake, and it was great to see them execute early and establish a comfortable lead early on. That first half was some of the best rugby we've played all season. The second half demonstrated that we still have things to work on if we're going to be competing for a national title. Congratulations to the team and the staff on another undefeated regular season and our 4th Liberty Conference Championship in as many seasons. We'll take a couple of weekends off from matches now and do everything we can to be ready for whoever we play on Saturday, November 22nd."
Special recognition goes to all our graduating seniors and graduate students who have likely played their last match on Marvel Field. The class of 2026 has gone undefeated in the regular season all 4 years, won all of the Ivy League and Liberty Conference championships during those 4 years, finished in the top 3 of NCR's rankings each of the past 3 seasons, including National Championships in 2022 and 2024, and closed out the 2025 regular season ranked number 2 in the country in this title defence campaign.
The team now enters a brief hiatus from match play, using this time to fine-tune areas for improvement and reinforce strategies for the upcoming national playoffs. The next match is scheduled for November 22, 2025, against an opponent, and in a location, yet to be determined. This break provides a valuable opportunity for the team to regroup and rest for what will hopefully be another long postseason run for the NCR Division 1 defending National Champions.
