Brown Men's Rugby Dominates in Sunny Showdown Against Syracuse
In an electrifying display of skill and strategy, Brown Men's Rugby outclassed Syracuse Hammerhead Rugby with a staggering 125-10 victory in their second week of the regular season. The match, held at Marvel Field at Brown University in Providence, RI, saw the home team in fine form under bright skies and warm conditions with temps in the mid-80's.
Brown's triumph was marked by impressively unselfish play with 10 different players contributing to the mammoth score. Tries were scored by Marco Lapierre '28 (3), Charm Tuala '28 (2), Raphael Lansonneur '25 (2), St John Smith '28 (2), Henrique Gabriel '26 (2), Santiago Cortabarria '25 (2), Leo Clayburgh G'26 (2), Cameron McAlpine '26, Asa Rosenmeier '27, Joe Al-Hasso '25, and Kenyon Graham '25. Co-captain fullback Raphael Lansonneur successfully converted 15/19 attempts on the day and finished with 40 points total.
Head Coach David Laflamme remarked,
"the score is the score, and obviously it's impressive when you put up a lot of points, but this week we really wanted to focus on correcting our set piece and retaining possession. We had big improvements there, winning 11 out of our 12 attacking set pieces, greatly reducing the number of penalties we committed, and conceding only 2 turnovers in the contact area...but we'd like to get that last number down to zero."
With such a commanding performance early in the season, Brown Men's Rugby sets a high bar for future games and signals their intent to be a formidable force in the league. Their next opponents will surely be studying this match closely to find ways to counter Brown's dynamic play style. The Bears next match will be against Harvard University in Camridge, MA at Mignone Field on Friday, September 20th at 7 PM.
