Brown B-side Secures Dominant Victory Over Syracuse University
In a stunning display of skill and teamwork, the bodacious Brown B's claimed a remarkable win against Syracuse University, finishing with a resounding score of 64-0. The b-side match, hosted on September 14, 2024, at Marvel Field at Brown University in Providence, RI, saw Brown dominate on a sunny day with temperatures in the mid 80s.
From the outset, Brown established a commanding lead, boasting a halftime score of 38-0. Their offensive prowess was spearheaded by notable performances from Antonio Cortabarria, who scored four tries and nailed three conversions. Additional scoring contributions came from Josh White with three tries (all in the second half), Kenyon Graham with two, and Toby Achleitner. The conversions task was shared among Antonio Cortabarria (3), James Horkan, Ben Shirley, and Malcolm Grant.
The loss left Syracuse's Hammerheads unable to respond throughout the competition, as they struggled to retain possession of the ball or penetrate the solid defence of Brown. Coach Ryan Grant emphasized the importance of keeping the opponent off the board,
"ultimately we need to be most proud of that zero on the other side of the scoresheet. Beyond playing well when we needed to defensively, our best defence is excellent ball retention in attack. They can't score if they don't have the ball."
This victory underscores the B's depth, strength, and cohesion as a unit, which appears to be in prime form early in the season.
Looking ahead to next week, senior James Horkan welcomed the chance to compete against an Ivy League rival,
"we love to get after it no matter who we're playing against, but it's easy to get excited about competing against another Ivy team, like Harvard next week. Can't wait to meet them under the lights on Friday night in Cambridge."
