Brown Men's Rugby Shines in Friendly Against University of New Haven

In a spectacular display of skill and teamwork, the Brown Men's Rugby team, also known as the Bears, claimed a decisive victory over the University of New Haven Chargers with a final score of 71-27 in a friendly developmental match. The event took place on a warm and sunny fall afternoon at Marvel Field, Brown University in Providence, RI, on October 5, 2024.
From the outset, the Bears dominated the game, leading at halftime with a score of 38-15. Key players such as Kieran Yeatman-Biggs, Ethan Liew, Everett Skillern, Louis Chang, Weston Granholm, Malcolm Grant, and Josh White contributed significantly by scoring tries. Malcolm Grant also excelled in conversions, successfully making eight. The match was particularly notable as 11 players participated in their first-ever rugby game, bringing fresh energy and determination to the field.
Major moments during the match included an early try by Kieran Yeatman-Biggs, which came directly from a restart kick reception. Additionally, players like Carter Lee, Louis Chang, and Everett Skillern made several long runs, energizing the crowd and boosting the team's morale. In a gesture of sportsmanship and solidarity, Brown loaned players Nathan Kwei, Om Sagar, Jack Elliott, and Michael Citarella to UNH, with Om and Jack contributing 12 of UNH's 27 points, including two tries by Om.
Reflecting on the match, Malcolm Grant, who had his first start at flyhalf, praised the effort of the newcomers:
"the effort the new guys showed was incredible. Rugby is a tough sport so we give them a ton of credit for getting out there and giving it a try, then for them to perform at a high level as well was great. It was really fun to play alongside this group."
Coach Luc Nahrgang also expressed his satisfaction with the performance, saying,
"Beautiful day for a group of guys to get their first rugby action. They came away with a win and hopefully caught the rugby bug."
Looking ahead, the Brown Men's Rugby Bears will face off against the College of the Holy Cross b-side on October 12, 2024, at Marvel Field. With a current season record of 1-0, the team is optimistic about their next challenge.
