In a spirited display of skill and teamwork, the Brown Men's Rugby team clinched a decisive 40-10 victory over Nichols College in the final match of the friendly 7s tournament held on March 9, 2025, at the Berylson Family Fields. The tournament featured a strong lineup of competitors, including Babson College, Endicott College, the University of Maine, the University of New Hampshire, and Nichols College.

Made up primarily of freshmen and sophomores, the young roster selected for this event played with tenacity and toughness throughout the tournament. The rostered players included Joe Ashford, Mike Citarella, Daijin Dorsey-Reyes, Erik Estienne, Malcolm Grant, Ethan Liew, Hugo Mullen, Matthew O'Connor, Jimmy Phelan, George Randell, Om Sagar, Ben Shirley, Rowe Stodolnic, and Brayden Wallace

In the tournament's first match, Brown showcased its potential to dominate the opposition with an impressive 35-5 victory over Endicott College. However, the next match in pool play, against the University of New Hampshire, would turn out to be the Bears' biggest challenge of the day. Scoreless through most of the first half, both Brown and UNH were able to score during the final minute of the half to draw even at halftime. Brown's relentless defense would prove the difference maker in the second half as the Bears were twice able to convert turnovers into tries to take a 15-5 lead with less than 3 minutes remaining. A stellar run by a UNH Wildcat player, breaking 2 tackles on a 70-meter try, closed the lead to one score. The Wildcats would regain possession once more, but the key moment of the tournament for Brown came during the ensuing crucial defensive stand, preventing UNH from scoring again in the final minute, which secured Brown a top seed in the playoff bracket and set the stage for their triumphant performance in the finals.

The University of Maine awaited Brown in the tournament semifinal. After pulling out with a close win in the previous match, the Brown Bears wanted to assert themselves early against the Black Bears from Orono, which included 6 tries scored in the first half alone, and a final score of 35-15.

The final pitted the hosts Brown against the darlings of the tournament, the Nichols College Bison. A local division 3 program on the rise, Nichols entered the event with the lowest profile of all the participating teams but was the best performing team during pool play, scoring 12 tries and allowing none. Traveling well, with a lot of Nichols supporters in attendance, the Bison were especially geared up to face Brown in the final. Brown struck first, with Erik Estienne taking a pass from Joe Ashford off a penalty quick tap in the first minute of play. Nichols hit back and tied the match 4 minutes in. In the final minute of the half, the Bears started to pull away, getting hard running tries from Om Sagar and Rowe Stodolnic to take a 15-5 lead into the break. It was in the second half that Brown really took over, opening the scoring in the first minute of the half and ending the match on another Brown try, with 3 others in between, the Bears scored 5 tries in all during the second half of the final. The final whistle of the day brought to close a 40-10 victory over Nichols in the final with Brown sporting a 4-0 tournament record, scoring 125 points while allowing 40.

Coach Ryan Grant praised the team's overall performance, stating,

"It was a really successful day overall. Obviously, the players earned a great outcome, winning the tournament, and it was awesome that we were able to get deep into our bench without a significant drop in effective play and spread the minutes around in most of our matches. We had a really balanced performance; the guys were very consistent throughout the day and saved their best rugby for the final. Nichols came out of pool play looking like the team to beat in the tournament, then they barely edged out a gritty UNH team in the semis, and we showed them a different level of rugby in that final match. This group of players is getting better and better as a unit as the spring season progresses."

Scoring for the Bears included tries from Erik Estienne (4), Matthew O'Connor (4), Malcolm Grant (3), Rowe Stodolnic (3), Daijin Dorsey-Reyes (2), Ethan Liew (2), George Randell (2), Joe Ashford, Hugo Mullen, Om Sagar, and Ben Shirley.

The Brown Men's Rugby team is already preparing for its next challenge, a friendly tournament on March 29th at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA. Fans and supporters are eagerly anticipating another stellar performance as the team continues to build momentum in the spring season.
