Brown Men's Rugby Claims Dual Division Victories at Ivy League 7s Tournament
In an exhilarating display of skill and determination, the Brown Men's Rugby Bears secured a thrilling victory at the 2025 Ivy League 7s tournament held at Harvard University on April 19th, 2025. Under sunny and warm conditions, the team showcased their resilience and teamwork, particularly during a tense final against Dartmouth.
The match was a rollercoaster of emotions, with Brown initially trailing by 10 points. Just before the half-time whistle, Tito Edjua turned the tide by scoring two critical tries in two minutes, allowing Brown to edge ahead on a Raphael Lansonneur conversion. In a demonstration of the quality of the opponent, Dartmouth quickly responded at the start of the second half, regaining the lead on their second phase from receiving the kickoff. The game then settled into a fierce defensive struggle, with neither side giving ground until the final moments. A crucial turnover gave Brown a lineout near midfield, setting the stage for Theo Romero's tactical play on the edge, absorbing a hit while delivering a pass, which was finished brilliantly by Kenyon Graham's 40-meter dash to the try line, clinching the game-winning points in the final minute of play.
"This team isn’t just a team, we’re a family. We’ve been through a lot together, and to come out on top with some of my closest friends means the world. We earned this as a group, and that makes the victory so much more rewarding,"
reflected senior and outgoing captain Raphael Lansonneur after the match.
"That’s the nature of sevens, it’s fast, it’s unpredictable, and momentum can shift in an instant. We knew going into it that not every play would go our way. So when we went down early, no one panicked, we stayed composed, stuck to our game plan and kept believing and working."
Head Coach David Laflamme was especially proud of his team's performance against a familiar foe,
"Ivy 7's is something we all look forward to each spring, and as it has been the last few years, we expected we'd wind up facing Dartmouth in the final. This was the first time we'd been on the field with them this spring, so the anticipation had been building to this moment. They're a talented and well-coached group, so going down by 2 scores early and overcoming that deficit was no small feat. We're proud of our guys for sticking together, righting the ship, and getting the job done in the end."
In all, Brown was a perfect 4-0 in the tournament, accumulating 113 points while allowing only 22. Raphael Lansonneur led the way in scoring with 29 points on 3 tries and 7 conversions. Kenyon Graham led the team in tries scored with 5, followed by Lansonneur, Tito Edjua, and Malcolm Grant with 3 each, Leo Clayburgh and Rowe Stodolnic with 2, and Ben Shirley with 1. Grant and Edjua also contributed a conversion each.

In the open division of the tournament, B-sides from Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, and Princeton competed in two pools, with the top team from each pool competing in the final. Like the A-side division, the open division final came down to Dartmouth and Brown, but the Brown B's really controlled their opponent from start to finish. 75 seconds into the match, Garett Mann scored on a quick tap penalty to give Brown the early lead, and Ben Shirley put through the conversion to make it 7-0. Dartmouth responded quickly with a try in the 3rd minute but missed the conversion to stay behind 7-5. A pair of tries and conversions from Ben Shirley and Charm Tuala before the end of the first half put Brown ahead comfortably 21-5. In the first minute of the second half, senior Tony Zhao gathered a loose ball from a mishandled Dartmouth pass deep in attacking territory to extend the lead to 26-5. A minute later, Dartmouth attacked the short side of a ruck to score from nearly 70 meters and added the conversion to cut the lead to 26-12 with less than 5 minutes to play. Most of the remaining minutes of the match were spent in the Dartmouth end of the pitch, with Brown retaining possession and threatening to score again. The match ended when senior James Horkan barreled into the defensive line, attempting to score at the Dartmouth goalline, but was injured in the effort. Writing himself into Brown rugby lore, while on the ground being tended to by team medic Kelly Teixeira, Horkan yelled,
"Ivy League Champions!"
and the Brown sideline responded with an eruption of cheers.
Over three matches, the B's were unbeaten while compiling 98 points and conceding only 12. The B's spread the scoring among a dozen different scorers. Joe Ashford led the team with 17 points on 3 tries and 1 conversion, followed by Matthew O'Connor with 12 points on 2 tries and 1 conversion, Miles Monroe with 2 tries, and Ben Shirley with 1 try and 2 conversions. Joe Al-Hasso, Antonio Cortabarria, James Horkan, and Charm Tuala all scored a try and a conversion each. Isaac Frost, Aaron Mertzel, Garett Mann, and Tony Zhao all chipped in a try as well.
