Brown Men's Rugby Secures a Strong Finish at the Collegiate Rugby Championship 7's

In an inspiring display at the Collegiate Rugby Championship 7's Premier Division national tournament, the Brown Men's Rugby team showcased their dedication and skill against 32 of the top collegiate teams in the nation. The tournament, held at the Maryland Soccerplex in Boyds, Maryland, saw the team claim a commendable 5th-place finish in a highly competitive field.
The CRC's pitted teams from across the country, with matches on April 25th and 26th, under warm, humid, and overcast skies. Brown, led by Head Coach David Laflamme, played through a rigorous schedule, which included two strong initial victories. In the quarterfinal round, the team faced off against Wheeling University, the 2024 CRC 7's National Champions, in a gripping encounter. Despite taking an early lead, Brown could not maintain their advantage, suffered a yellow card late, and eventually succumbed to Wheeling by a score of 19-10. However, on the second day, Brown returned to form, triumphantly overcoming Siena and Iowa Central to secure the 5th place spot in the Premier Division table of 32 teams. Wheeling would go on to dominate the final rounds of the bracket and claim a second consecutive 7s title.
Coach Laflamme praised the team's resilience and spirit, reflecting on the challenging season and the efforts made by the 13 players who traveled to Maryland:
"Brown Men's Rugby continues to make strides in the collegiate rugby scene every time we step out onto the pitch. It's been a long season leading up to the CRC's with some pretty miserable weather... The effort that each and every player put into the weekend was inspirational,"
he stated. Indeed, a standout performance by Raphael Lansonneur, who scored 5 tries and 13 conversions for 51 total points, earned him a spot on the All-Tournament Team.
Commenting on the toughness of the team, which had many players overcoming injuries to finish the season, Coach Laflamme continued, 'We may have had to go through a couple cases of tape to get there but, in the end, the boys represented themselves and the university with quality performances. Brown demonstrated to the rest of the country that we produce quality rugby in both XV's and in VII's. Tennis great Jimmy Connor once said that his greatest victory was every time he walked out there, gave it everything, and left everything out there. I couldn't have been prouder of the performance this weekend. While no hardware was won, Brown and the players won by showing to the country that this program is a contender on the national rugby scene.'
With a points aggregate of 141 scored and 65 allowed over 5 matches, many players contributed to the tally. Tito Edjua also scored 5 tries, while Erik Estienne, Kenyon Graham, and Marco Lapierre scored 3 each. Leo Clayburgh, Malcolm Grant, Theo Romero, and David Scott also got the ref's arm raised.
