Brown Men's Rugby Bears Prevail in Preseason Friendly Against Bishop's University

In an exciting preseason friendly match on August 29, 2025, the Brown Men's Rugby Bears showcased a strong start to their season, defeating Bishop's University Gaiters (yes,
"Gaiters."
Their mascot is an alligator, wearing gaiters. Google it...) with a commanding score of 49-22. The match took place at Sabine Field at Norwich University in Northfield, Vermont, under a sky that was 70 degrees and partly sunny most of the match before the rain clouds rolled in towards the end.
The first half saw the Bears dominate the field, closing the period at 35-7 in favor of Brown. Key players such as Finley Brown, Kaspar Pitblado, Malcolm Grant, Garett Mann, Marco Lapierre, Theo Romero, and Ben Shirley each scored tries, making substantial contributions to the team's robust halftime lead. Conversion kicks were expertly handled by Tito Eduja, who successfully completed all six of his attempts, and Leo Clayburgh who went 1 for 1.
Throughout the match, Brown continued to display impressive tactics and teamwork, which were particularly noteworthy as they tested new player combinations. The game wrapped up with Brown still in control, despite the changing weather, finishing strong with a 49-22 victory over Bishop's.
Reflecting on the match, Head Coach David Laflamme commented, "First I want to express my gratitude to the Norwich club and Coach Weggler for hosting this match and to Bishop's University for making the border crossing to be here. It was great to get a look at different personnel groupings and guys in new roles against a high-quality opponent. Our guys were effective in their execution no matter who they were playing next to, which is critical for dealing with the challenges of the regular season.
Looking forward, the Bears are set to open their slate of conference contests against the Stags of Fairfield University on September 6, 2025, at Grauert Field in Fairfield, CT. This upcoming match promises to be a demanding encounter as Fairfield is expected to bring a heightened level of physicality to the field.
