Regina High School Varsity Volleyball Secures Victory Over LHN Mustangs

On September 10, 2024, Regina High School's varsity volleyball team clinched a significant win against the LHN Mustangs, wrapping up the contest with a final score of Regina 3, LHN 1. The match, hosted at Regina, was once again a competitive match between these two CHSL AA teams.

The first set saw Regina taking the lead with a score of 25-19, a great start for the Saddlelites. Although LHN managed to rebound in the second set with a score of 25-20, Regina quickly regained their composure, securing the third set with another 25-19 score. The fourth and final set highlighted the competition’s intensity, with Regina narrowly claiming victory, 26-24. This game solidifies the volleyball rivalry between these two talented programs.

Amanda Vushaj, who delivered a stellar performance with 17 kills, led Regina's offense alongside Cal Mastry and Lilly Zdankiewicz, each contributing 11 kills. Zdankiewicz also impressed on defense with 4 blocks, matching Vushaj’s defensive efforts. The defense was further bolstered by Ella Sikorski’s remarkable 26 digs, supported by Ava Janusch with 15, and both Mastry and Sara Wilking contributing 10 digs each.

The service game was strong, with Janusch leading the charge with 3 aces, followed by Mastry, Giuliana Foltz, and Sikorski, who each added 2 aces. Additionally, assists were well-distributed with Wilking providing 24 assists and Cat Jenkins contributing 14, ensuring that Regina’s offense smoothly converted opportunities throughout the match.

Head Coach Laura Papa reflected on the game saying,

"Lutheran North is always a big game for us. We started out a little slow, but the energy in the gym really helped kick us into gear. Our defense was great and the hitters started to connect. We fought tough and in the end the Saddlelites prevailed!"

"I'm ecstatic. I'm really proud of our team,"

Amanda Vushaj said.

"This win was one of our goals coming into the season. I think this game is going to help build momentum moving on."

Vushaj also credited the student section for the win.

"They brought a ton of energy!"

Looking ahead, Regina High School is set to face Shrine at home on September 18, another strong division opponent. After their recent performance, the team is optimistic about their upcoming match-ups within the league.
