Central Lake/Ellsworth Trojans Rally for a Remarkable Victory Against Cedarville

CLE Dominates Ranked Cedarville on Senior Night

On a chilly evening at Herrick Athletic Complex, the Central Lake/Ellsworth Trojans faced off against the Cedarville Islanders in an intense non-conference varsity football game. Despite early challenges, the Trojans managed a stunning turnaround to win 56-20 in front of their home crowd.

The game started under less favorable conditions with cold, dark, and damp weather, possibly influencing the early performance. By halftime, the Trojans were trailing the Cedarville Islanders 14-20. Critical penalties negated first-half touchdowns, which didn't allow CLE to close the gap initially.

The second half of the game marked a significant shift in momentum, starting with an extraordinary one-handed interception by Billy Hopp on the opening drive. This key moment sparked the Trojans into action, leading to an impressive 48 unanswered points.

Significant contributions came from multiple players on offense and defense. Brady Roggenbeck, threw for 107 yards on 10 of 12 passing with a touchdown, and also made substantial rushing contributions (8 carries for 68 yards and a TD). CLE racked up 437 yards of total offense, including 330 yards on the ground and 107 through the air. Josiah Chellis finished with 5 receptions for 50 yards and a TD, and added 1 rush for 76 yards and a TD. Billy Hopp finished with 131 yards rushing on 19 totes (3 TD's), while Riley Shafer added 56 yards and a touchdown on 14 hardnosed carries. Nolan Essenberg added 25 yards on 2 receptions.

Chellis added a spectacular 64-yard punt return touchdown.

Defensively, Josiah Chellis (6 tackles), Nolyn Whisler, and Jeremiah Briolat (5 tackles each) dominated defensively, setting a strong defensive stance that Cedarville couldn't overcome. Hopp also got in on the action, adding 4 tackles and 2 interceptions, while Mason Henderson added 4 tackles. Shafer and Tristan Druckenmiller were also key contributors on the defensive side, and Roman Windish closed the game out with an interception of his own to seal the victory.

The victory was not just a game-changer but a potential season-defining moment for the Trojans as they look to their next game at Fife Lake Forest Area against Forest Area, where a win should propel them to postseason play and a possible home game. Head Coach Chase Hibbard highlighted the team's resilience, commending their ability to overcome adversity and adjust their game plan effectively in the second half.
