Holy Name junior Meka Balas has qualified for the OHSAA Cross Country state meet, becoming the first Green Wave runner to achieve this feat since Jon Winnyk in 2004. Balas's momentous journey to the state competition marks a significant milestone not only for him but for the entire Holy Name Cross Country team.

Throughout the season, Balas has been a standout performer, achieving remarkable finishes. His drive and perseverance shone brightly at the district meet held at Lorain County Community College (LCCC), known as one of the state's most challenging courses. At LCCC, he finished 17th with a time of 17:07, securing his place at the regional meet. The significance of his performance is underscored by the caliber of the competition; the top four teams at the district meet were also in the top ten at the state level.

Balas continued to excel at the regional meet at Boardman where he placed 15th out of 148 runners. This placement earned him a coveted spot at the state meet this Saturday, cementing his status as one of Holy Name’s premier runners. Reflecting on his season, Balas also set exceptional personal records, posting the 7th fastest time in school history and the fastest since 1994.

The junior’s achievements extend beyond individual accolades, contributing significantly to the team’s dynamics and performance. His efforts helped elevate the Green Wave's visibility in the competitive Cross Country landscape, as evidenced by his all-season highlights which include top finishes at various invitational meets and earning All-Conference 1st Team honors at the NCC Conference Meet alongside breaking a course record.

This exceptional season not only highlights Balas's development as an athlete but also sets an inspiring benchmark for his teammates and future runners at Holy Name. As the community cheers on Balas at the state meet tomorrow, his journey from the invitational to the state level embodies the spirit and determination of Holy Name's Cross Country program.
The OHSAA State meet is at Fortress Obetz and Memorial Park (4175 Alum Creek Drive, Obetz, OH 43207) in Columbus. Meka competes at 12pm. Good luck Meka!
