Avon girls golf wins SWC crown by one stroke over Avon Lake

With freshman Jena Plantner leading the way, the Avon girls golf team won the Southwestern Conference championship Monday by a single stroke over rival Avon Lake at Big Met Golf Course in Fairview Park.
The Eagles, which lost both dual matches to the Shoregals during the season, had a team total of 364, just ahead of Avon Lake at 365. Both Avon and Avon Lake finished the dual portion of the conference season with 10-2 marks. Led by individual medalist Leah DiFranco with a 79, Midview was third at 387, followed by Olmsted Falls (393), Berea-Midpark (401), Amherst (407) and North Ridgeville (457).
Plantner carded an 87 to lead the Eagles, who won their first SWC title since 2022 in knocking off two-time defending champion Avon Lake. She was followed by Mylah Beran at 88, Jocelyn England at 91 and Reese Thomas at 98. Also participating for Avon were Emma Fitch with a 99 and Abby Owens at 100.
Big Met will also be the site of the Division I sectional tournament to be held Sept. 29.
