Brown Men's Rugby Development Side Clinches Victory Over URI B-side in a Spirited Encounter

In an exciting display of growing rugby prowess at Marvel Field, Brown University, the Brown Men's Rugby development side, made up mostly of new-to-rugby club members and a few veteran players, secured a significant victory against the University of Rhode Island B-side, on Saturday, November 2, 2024. The friendly developmental match concluded with a final score of Brown 44, URI 31, concluding the dev-side's season record at an undefeated 2-0.

The first half set a strong tone for the game, with Brown taking a substantial lead at 24-12, thanks to a late try from scrumhalf Josh White. This early advantage proved crucial as the match intensified. The Bears showcased exceptional teamwork and strategic play, managing to expand their lead during the opening moments of the second half with a long distance run from elusive winger Tykei. The URI Rams were able to score 3 tries against the Bears in the second period but were never able to close the gap on Brown. Tries were scored by Mads Mathieson, Nathan Kwei, Rohan Jayaraman, Josh White, James Yun, James Horkan, Hugo Mullen, and Tykei, delivering a dynamic and multi-front offensive performance.

Malcolm Grant, who contributed to the scoring with two successful conversions and provided steady leadership from the flyhalf position, reflected on the team's development,

"The brand new guys did great, there was such a huge improvement in their play from their first match ever last month to now. It was a lot of fun to play with this unit again having just started playing rugby myself last season."

His comments highlight the growth and quick adaptation of the newcomers to the rigors of collegiate rugby.

Development side coach Luc Nahrgang summed up what was a very successful fall season for this group,

"This was a hard fought game against an established URI team. Our guys are learning the game and the product on the field is starting to resemble real rugby. Several of the players have made big steps in their development over a very short fall season."

Key moments of the match included a sequence where Brown decisively scored both at the end of the first half and the beginning of the second, effectively maintaining a comfortable lead over URI. This strategic dominance underscores the developmental side's learning and adaptation under competitive conditions.

Looking ahead, the Brown Men's Rugby team is set to participate in the Cianci 7's Tournament on Sunday, November 24th, 2024, at Kevin M. Hurley Middle School in Seekonk, MA, where the development team is reigning back-to-back social division champions. The team hopes to continue its winning ways in the Olympic format and further the players' development in what promises to be a challenging and exciting tournament.
